Under saddle piezo pickup question

Post by vandenboom » Fri Aug 28, 2009 8:18 pm

I am about to install an ARTEC under saddle pickup, which I have used before. Damm good value I think. They come with an approx 3mm jack on the end. In the past, I have cut this off as my saddle slot was only 3/32" and the jack is almost 1/8" diameter. The cable is about 5/64" diameter. I then just soldered the cable to the end pin. This is a pain if you want to remove either the pickup or endpin at any stage.

This time, I am using a 1/8" saddle so the jack will fit in the slot, but in drilling the hole through bridge into soundbox, I wondered if there is a view out there on it being better to keep the hole smaller rather than bigger i.e. 2mm vs 3mm. In thinking through how the saddle/bridge/pickup etc work, I can't think of a reason why it should make any difference. Thoughts?
