Curved Radius Templates

Post by Kim Strode » Thu Nov 22, 2007 4:38 pm

I am looking for a source of radius outlines or templates, so I can make my own radius dishes on a lathe. Particularly 30' radius and upwards. Does anyone have a link?

I made my own by using a long tape measure with a pencil at the desired mark and tracing an arc. Very easy to do and cheap.

There is (or used to be) a pdf on the MIMF site (in the library) of a whole range of radius outlines. If you can't find it I have it on the 'puter at home and I can send it to you.

I have been building radius workboards using John Calkin's method of radial spokes cut to the necessary shape glued to an MDF or ply base with a top of 3mm masonite or MDF just glued on (written a few years ago in American Lutherie. A simple a cheap method for those of us without a lathe. I can post some instructions if anyone wants them

cheers

I would really appreciate it Graham if you could post instructions for your 'radial spokes' method of making workboards. Thanks

Somewhere, I read of someone doing this by suspending a router(!!) from the shed ceiling, putting the MDF blank on the floor and playing pendulums...

30' Shed??
Woah! That's a pretty big shed! Maybe a Barn!

Here's a link posted by Klepper on the OLF to a method of making any radius you'd like by using 2 pins and two long pieces of wood!

Long Compass

All one needs is the chordal height for the distance between the pins!
