Flooded Timber

Post by Ricardo » Sat Jan 29, 2011 2:40 pm

Guys I need some help, I was flooded in the January Floods here in Brisbane, I have only today been able to access my shed, all the timber tools, jigs , lets face it the bloody lot was seriously flooded, and has been in water mud for 2 weeks now in my shed in our basement, I have lots of timber, specialty tools, jibs that i want to try to save.

Can you please provide me some advise on how i may rescue the timbers and tools.

For power tools a clean fresh water rinse -big time- dry thoroughly but quickly and hit very thoroughly with WD 40 or whatever.
Handtools, drill bits etc a freshwater rinse, dry and throw into a 44 gallon drum of waste vegetable cooking oil. Any oil or diesel will do as an alternate but for that is best with a trivet on the bottom for the tools/bits to sit on so any remaining water can sit below the tools. Retrieve and restore at leisure.
Wood - let it be. Tis second nature for it.

The wood just needs to be rinsed clean and stickered as if it was green. Remember that stickers may leave marks from mould etc, so it's best to pull the stack apart after a few days and move things about.

How absolutely crappy (to put it mildly) to have you WS flooded Richardo, I can see everyone here cringing at the thought. Hopefully your tools are not to pitted and will clean up with a bit of light sanding and polishing.
Good luck with it all.

Bugger! :(

Heart goes out to you Ricardo...Puff's advice sounds good to me so I would go with that in your shoes. Get the hand tools rinsed and submerged in oil asap, sticker the wood and let it dry steady.

Cheers
