EVALUATION OF AUSTRALIAN TIMBERS FOR USE by A Morrow - link

Post by Daniel_M » Wed Feb 23, 2011 2:41 pm

Hi All, I just came across this link on the wood working forum and thought that you might enjoy reading this as much as I. Apologies if this has been posted here before - I did a search but could only find discussion of the report (before it was finished) but not a llink to it. here is the original post...

It covers the use of Australian timbers as tonewoods. Covers a lot of the species specific characteristics as well in terms of sound conduction speeds, density, etc. It is a free download but the site it is from would like donations for any downloads.

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for posting this link! I will enjoy reading this... It's 130 pages with most of the appendixes!
I just scrolled through the article (cost me 20 minutes!) and have seen many things that caught my attention. Tomorrow I'll feed my printer with some paper to read the whole thing "off-screen".

A funny detail: when I saw the split wood on page 48 I thought "that's the kind of no-runout wood which my main spruce provider sells when saying it's AA or better". When seconds later I read the picture's legend I nearly fell off my chair... It's obviously him (or one of his two or three employees) who split that wood! Right: he's not Australian, and the article seems to be solidly built on well made comparisons.

We have this link as posted as a sticky in the Australian woods section of the forum. Does not hurt to give it some more exposure though.
