Uke nut slot files

Post by vandenboom » Mon Jun 20, 2011 10:06 pm

I (may) need to get some files for cutting uke nut slots. I notices string sizes vary a bit.
Can anyone help out with suitable nut files from Stewmac?
I am guessing the .026"/.032" and .036/.042"????

Then again, someone will probably suggest I use a hacksaw or something!!
Thanks. Frank.

G'day Frank, use a hacksaw or something. I have just measured the strings on my soprano, they are a black nylon set from Hana Lima and they measure G = 0.75mm, C = 1mm, E = 0.85mm, A = 0.6mm. That is the best I can do to help there mate.

I use to use a long set of feeler gauges, little cuts along the blade edge and they were great for rough cutting nuts. Nowadays with the advent of the internet and online shopping and places like stewmac, its just as easy to buy a complete nut set (which I did)

My tool box for classes contains 4 of the StewMac #4542 files. You can roll them from side to side to make the wider slots. It's also the only file that Rick Turner had in his class tool kit.

Those are the one I use frank. If you use them you'll have nuts just like mine.
