Thanks Robbie, I've never used tru oil so once again this will get filed away in the reference section! Great sound track too :cl .

Nice to hear in church but not in a Mexican prison.

Doesn't look cheap but an interesting alternative. If it works on guns it can work on guitars...

Thanks Robbie. Nice tutorial.
I have used Tru Oil on 2 guitars and I really like it for a simply applied satin (or semi-gloss) finish.
It is very easy to apply - as you demonstrated. Doesn't smell as good as FP or Danish Oil, but it seems to come up with a more durable and solid result.

cheers
Mark

That little bottle goes a long way though. I've used tru oil for heaps of necks and I think 2 bodies (electric basses) and it's pretty idiot proof, no regrets.

Very easy to use, requires only rag + time. Spraying for me is still 10 years experience away from working out so I'm a big fan!

Thanks everyone. Actually, Tru oil is one of the cheapest and easiest finishes to apply. If using any oil on an acoustic instrument I first like to seal everything with a coat of shellac.

Cheers for clearing that up. Will have to get some. Could you use it on top of a sealer like tung oil or are you going to see adhesion problems?

Unless you are going for a high gloss, the small bottle will last a while. How much you use for the high gloss depends on how well you prepped the surface.

It really is as easy as Robbie showed. Even I can turn out a nice finish with it. Actually, its the only finish I will use because I know I can't stuff it up.

Thanks Robbie, your video makes me think I should try it at least! :D

What about shelf life? I couldn't locate any seller of Tru Oil in my country so I'll have to import it which makes small quantities very unattractive. :?

A flat rate box will be 13.85, if memory serves. I just don't know if it falls under hazardous material restrictions here or there. And I'm not seeing anyone who will ship internationally yet.

The problem is not only shipping cost (I would order it from Germany, that stuff doesn't get out of the US in a flat rate box, it could blow up the airplane! ). Getting it into Switzerland (from wherever) also would involve customs paperwork (+ $30 or more per shipping) because of inflammable contents. So I'll have to have to get it sent to German friends, make a 50km trip over the border which means time and everything. Getting a bigger bottle once would be better - if the stuff doesn't turn bad over a few years.

Thanks anyway Lillian. :D

Take the train to Munich. Its beautiful this time of the year.

Store it in a collapsible bottle like what photo chemicals were stored in.

The beer is always good, but if you like fests, Oktoberfest is best. I'm just not a fan of crowds. But I managed to make it to one Oktoberfest for a hour or so before reaching my fill of noise and drunks. I watched someone pit a table of Aussies against a table of Kiwis. It got ugly quick and was time to leave.

Why would you want to use it over tung oil?

Robbie in the video you appear to be using a paper towel to wipe on the oil?

Thanks Robbie, looks like good stuff i wouldn't mind trying it out. Does anybody know if the same Tru oil is available in Aus, and if not is there an equivalent on the market here?
Cheers,,,

I just used tung oil as a sealer on an electric and am planning to seal the tung oil with shellac (a bit of an extra step but oh well). Next time will just use shellac and try out this tru oil stuff. Cheers Robbie
