Coming along beautifully Sergy,
The rose looks very crisp and clean, but then so does everything you have shown us.
Thanks again for sharing.

Looking really good Sergy! You work alot faster than I do when building a lute.

Thanks Martin! Probably has come time to order strings.kiwigeo wrote:Looking really good Sergy! You work alot faster than I do when building a lute.
What do you think about a thickness of strings for this instrument?
Thanks John! It is a great compliment. I am glad that my modest work can inspire.woodrat wrote:Sergy, Your work is an inspiration!...I am glad that guitars dont have carved rosettes though! I love looking at how its coming along.

I would try to make a guitar with the carved rosette. It can look very stylishly.
Re: Building archlute.
Not sure about the strings you'd run on this monster. Choosing strings for my 7 course Renaissance lute was done using guidelines laid out in Lundberg's book. I ended up going with wound gut bass strings and nylgut treble strings...all made by Aquilia in Italy.Sergy wrote:Thanks Martin! Your choice of string will depend on tuning, string length and tension.

Looking very classy Sergy, excellent work It is inspiring indeed, if I wasn't as busy as a one armed paperhanger at the moment I would be seriously tempted to make a start on mine . Thanks for posting your pictures though, between you & Martin I'll have all the inspiration & guidelines I'll need when I do.

I think about nilgut + Piramid...
string length: 57,0 - 59,0 / 83,0 cm
tune: a’a’ e’e’ hh gg dd AA GG FF 9E 10D 11C 12H’ 13A’ 14G’
I can tell to you, that this work as "time machine". You transfers to that early epoch.Nick wrote: ... It is inspiring indeed, if I wasn't as busy as a one armed paperhanger at the moment I would be seriously tempted to make a start on mine .
And it is definitely felt... It is magic...
I don't notice time, and for this reason I can work until late at night.

Not often you see a headstock longer than the fingerboard . Nice work Sergy, body looks nice with that coat of shellac on it.

Looking good Sergy.
Do you have any photos of the half binding going in? Did you make up your own cutter to cut the channel?

Nick, Allen, Martin - thanks for kind comments.
But.... for the binding channel I used Dremel...
(we will consider it as an exception to the rules)
Has found two photos -
I didn't apply to this lute power tools, it all I did only by the hand tools.kiwigeo wrote:

Re: Building archlute.
I'm liking it Sergy, excellent job & the pegs are a nice lighter contrast to the black, this looks like one special instrument. Can't wait to see it finished (with strings on that is!) and a sound bite perhaps of 'Enter Sandman' by Metallica
