Wood photos.

Hi,

I would have thought there would have been heaps of threads of photos of peoples special pieces of wood.
I imagine everyone has a few really special pieces that they wouldn't mind sharing a photo of.
I will take some photos tomorrow of what I think is some of the most stunning blackwood I have seen in real life. So if you have some photos why not share even if it's not the greatest perhaps it has a good story.

What a fantastic collection Rob.

The international wood collectors society had there annual general meeting at Ravenshoes Torimba Festival last year and had a display of woods from far and wide there. Must have been close to a thousand samples all lacquered up and both common and botanical name. I could have spent hours looking at them, but alas the other half wasn't as interested as I was.

I have been doing furniture restoration work for a lady client who is a great client, we have restored about twenty pieces for her over the past five years,and it's all about keeping things original ,sympathetic repairs and reviving original finishes .The box belongs to her and with her permision I can show it off. It belonged to her Grand Father, Sir Harry Lawson ,who was Victorian Premier from 1918 to 1924. It needs a little work to the felt on the bottom. She had a good laugh when she saw how our jaws dropped as it was opened up

Iv'e been having the same laugh all week showing people.

It's interesting that Stu posted that picture of his nice Qld Maple top, the same timber the box is made from [ Im pretty sure ] the bit I was not so sure of is why is the colour so blonde on the inside ? I was asuming the outside had faded to that gorgeous colour,but the inside is the same ,even under the paper, we dont get to see much QLD Maple ,is there a pale version of it ?

Great collection in a small box, Rob! Enjoy and take pictures (at least for you) from every possible and impossible angle before you have to give it back to the generous Lady!

But i must say that I am disappointed that the Newport Railway Workshops obviously did not appreciate the highly valued Australian "rotten timbers" such as blackheart sassafras and tiger myrtle.

So I proudly present some spalted beech I recently harvested about 500 meters from home.

Okay, now i am jealous. The best i have is a quilted maple drop cap for a tele i am currently building.

Will see if i can get a photo tonight. It has been stained though as part of the finishing process, not yet fully finished about half done, does this count or are we looking for un-touched timbers?

If you sand it back to natural colour it counts.

I did not have enough time to get the timber so just took a photo of a finished weissenborn made out of the same tree.

This tree is one my father and a friend of his got and quartered. I cant remember if I did the tailing out of this one or not it was all just wood to me when I was younger.

The guitar is from a different tree, not as perfect but its pretty wild.

I have already sanded it back many many times already, i must be the worlds worst finisher!!! I will post a photo when its finished, just give me another 2 years.

what timbers do you have there?

I imagine you would use a fair bit of Malaysian blackwood and striped ebony?

What Malaysian timbers are suitable for guitars?

Here's one you guys (with the exception of the other kiwis on here) wouldn't have heard of,
its Heart Rimu. Probably our best known and most used native and in
my opinion our best tonewood, has that rosewoodesque bell like tap tone.
beautiful warm colour and amazing grain and like most of our woods its a softwood so no pore filling required !!! woohooo.
