I was in a shop a few weeks ago when a guy brought in a 58 strat asking what it was worth.

Had it been "Mary Kay" (I believe this means all original but caked with make-up and driving a pink Cadillac.....) and in good shape $25K+ would have been the value. There also are a lot of these in this area that are priced in this range but not selling because of the economy....

This one had been refinished which dropped it's value considerably.... It also had the original pick-ups removed and replaced...... And the neck was twisted but it played well anyway.

Interestingly the owner when told of the things that were not original or not right about his guitar one by one knew about them but failed to mention it up front......

What surprised me the most was even though this strat was in very poor shape, not all original, refinished, it was believed that some "chump" would still pay $12-$15K for it.........

And amazingly like all Fenders these were not craftsman guitars. They were designed to be manufactured inexpensively and in large quantities.

My area has the worst economy in the US and as such we are see a lot of vintage guitars come up for sale now with few buyers....
