Questions about bending Brazilian Rosewood

Post by kiwigeo » Thu Mar 15, 2012 9:06 am

Some queries from Sergy:

"I have a few questions -
Tell me please about Brazilian rosewood for the bending?
Its hard to bend?
The temperature should be high?
How long does it hold in water?
What is the thickness of the sides is better? I have now made 2.00 mm ...
In my guitar "waist" is a sharp bend, I fear that it may break during bending.

It bends beautifully. I recommend two heat blankets, one for either side of the wood. Typical heat settings for rosewoods work fine. Using craft paper as a barrier between the wood and the blankets and steel slats helps to absorb some of the baked-out resins. Remember that regular steel or spring steel can cause staining on a lot of woods, so go with aluminum or some sort of stainless spring steel for the slats.
