As you can imagine living on the edge of the Otway Ranges has it's advantages one of which is that the local grocery shop often has items on sale that aren't found in other parts of the country.

Only this morning I dropped into the local IGA to get some bread and milk when I espied a few Blackwood billets hidden away between the Tim Tams and the Iced Vovos with a special tag on them. As much as all I wanted was some milk for my morning coffee and some crumpets I can never resist the smell of freshly hewn Blackwod in the morning so they were duly thrown in the back seat of the car and smuggled into an area where "her indoors" would have no inkling of my nefarious activities.

Jaaaayzzzus!!!! You poor bastard Bob. You do know that excessive exposure to high figure blackwood gives you an allergy to beer and shrinks ur testicles don't ya mate? For a bloke like urself that could be a worry Bob, but if you send it may way it may help me get rid of a bit of the gut and who knows, maybe after a while I could do away with the wheelbarrow when I want to get around the place. :D

Cheers

Kim

Let's get to the more interesting part: did you buy the milk or not?

It's some of the most unusual figure and colour I've seen.

It came from Murray Kidman who has been supplying Maton for the last 25 years.

He tells me he'll have a website up soon and will be selling from that so I'll let you know where you can find him if you want to buy from him.

Traditionally he's sold in bulk lots or billets like above so I don't know if he's going to be interested in selling in lots of one or two sets. Time will tell.

G'day Bob

Lucky you. I bought near to a trailer load of billets from what I believe is the same source some years ago. Got it from a wood dealer in Canberra who ordered it specially for me and he told me it came from a fellow who cut wood for Maton in the Otways. It was all green chainsawn billets, and some unusual colours that I had never seen before or have seen since. I air dried it and it was such superb Blackwood, what I thought would see me out got used up quickly. Unfortunately only have a couple of mandolin sets left now, but would buy more of that sort of quality Blackwood in an instant. Here is where some of it ended up

Peter

Sounds like Murray. He's a magician with a chainsaw. As I said I'll post the URL of his website when he gets it online which he tells me will be on Wednesday.

His wood is always good quality and you are correct about the variety of colurs and textures in the Otway wood. There is some most unusual stuff coming from there

Regards
Bob, Geelong
