What to do with a lump of sassafras

Post by matthew » Sun Feb 24, 2008 10:13 pm

My weekend has been quite productive. Apart from accidentally splitting my tas oak bass back, and regluing it again, I worked some more on my scroll.

Very nice, Matthew. That's great work and it is a very beautiful piece of wood.

Matthew, I hope this is destined to be finished transparently - or at least if traditionally stained/toned, that the wood colors will shine through. Very nice!

...I don't know why there are so few violin family instruments finished "clear". I mean, I know it is dictated by tradition, but ...

Just amazing Mathew. I've never tried carving. I find it difficult in visualize the shape that I would want to emerge from the wood, and I'm in awe of those that have this ability, or should I say gift.

Well its not necessarily a gift.

To carve a scroll you have guides and drawings and measurements and a method. You just have to work carefuly because going around and around things can go wonky easily, and of course the grain of the wood keeps changing direction ...
