Australian Tonewoods visit

Post by sebastiaan56 » Mon Feb 25, 2008 8:50 am

Well I finally got to meet Tim yesterday. My cabbie's GPS was sending us away when I rang Tim with the "exactly where are you? question. Tim's smiling face greeted us on the the footpath and away we went. It was WAS going psycho.

In unimposing premises Tim has a collection of what I reckon is the best on offer. I was particularly impressed with the stash of Tiger Myrtle. I didnt realise that this limited resouce is in real danger of being totally extinguished. A tragedy so I bought up. Other titbits not so obvious on the website include a collection of Lutz and Red Cedar (?) from Shane Neifer, booingggggggggg. Still the Monterey Cypress and King Billy Pine continue to impress as tonewoods. Similar size and shaped pieces rang just as beautifully. As a greenie it is important to me that we use as many local materials as possible.

Tassie Blackwood, gleam, shine, flash, flash.... I was getting sore eyes by then, amazingly grained Sheoaks, Mulgas heavy enough to break bones yet with a bell like tap, obscurely grained eucalypts, and on and on it went.

I only had a few hours, but Tim was generous with his time and considerable expertise. He is obviously passionate about Australian timber but quite reasonable in his pricing. I left with a hole in my back pocket and Tim even drove me to the airport! Bargain!

Sorry guys, no photos as I travel light. Thanks again Tim,

Sebastiaan

Now I've got WAS envy. I'll have to sweet talk the missus to let me take my holidays in WA. She'd let me go, but only give me enough money to just get home...
