Neck bolts

Post by gratay » Tue Feb 26, 2008 7:32 pm

Just wondering if anyone that does bolt-on mortise and tenon necks can shed any light on where they get their bolts from...?
I've seen the ones on the LMII site which look pretty good ..
Is there anywhere else I could look.
Cheers Grant

thanks Bob,
I'll head down to the sausage sizzle at bunnings tomorrow and have a look at what they have in bolts.

I'm serious Grant.

That's what we use. I generally buy them from Fagg's Mitre 10 in Geelong because it's closer than Bunnies.

They're a little long so we saw them off with a hacksaw.

And the snags on a Saturday morning are a bonus

The Bunnies and Miter 10 in Cairns don't carry anything like the ones you need for a neck. They have these little piss ant things that are totally useless for this application. I go to a cabinetmaker supply place. One bolt and barrel nut to suit is $1. Can't beat that price.

had a look at bunnies and yeah there was 50mm m6 allen key bolts....but the 15mm barrel nuts are the off-centre type....
would prefer 1 1/2" bolts and the barrels with the thread in the centre..

but they will work I'm sure.

are you guys using the barrels or threaded inserts in the heel?

Barrels here. The ones with the off center thread still work, I've used them on two guitars without problems.

I'm not a fan of bolt on necks so I've never tried to source them, but most cities would have a specialist fasteners supply shop like Boltmasters. Self-tapping steel threaded inserts are commonly used in engineering, so I’m sure these shops would have them in stock in a range of sizes.

I've used both barrels and inserts. I prefer the barrels myself. On the 2 current works in progress I'm trying hanger bolts. They're the ones with wood screw thread 1/2 way and regular machine thread the other 1/2. I'm using a butt joint on the neck, and it seems to be the easiest one to get to fit just so, (at least for me).

James...I think your right ...should be plenty of fastener/cabinet maker supplies that would have this sought of thing.

Allen...I'm interested in the Butt Join method...certainly make things easier I'd imagine....have you heard the guitars yet? I'd be interested to know what you think of the sound compared to M&T necks.

and for anyone interested I googled around and found these.

They're not complete as yet, but I really can't see that you will notice a difference in tone if the neck to body contact is good. There are quite a few people using a butt joint. I read about it first on the OLF.

I switched to it because my necks are fully bolt on (no gluing on a fret board) and I use a tongue under the fret board that is mortised into a neck block that is a bit like a Spanish Heel. Having a mortise/tenon neck along with the fret board support was just too many tenons to get to fit perfectly when I was trying to get the neck set right.

I got the main inspiration after Colin posted some photos of how he goes about building his neck block/neck joint. I've been struggling with neck set with the wide humidity swings we get up here. I'm still wrapping my head around how to go about an adjustable neck, and that is going to be my next project.
