Tenon Saw for side groves on a Classical Guitar

Post by zendo » Tue Jun 04, 2013 3:51 pm

In the past I have used a tenon saw with a 1mm cut for the groves in the heel that take the side pieces. It would be more useful and more accurate to use a saw with a 2mm cut. Courtnall suggests setting the teeth wider on a tenon saw but I don't think the 12 or 14 tpi would allow for such a wide cut... any ideas welcomed... what do others do?

Option 1 - Do the 1mm cut. Stick a 1m thick cabinet scraper in the cut and do another 1mm cut using the cabinet scraper as a guide. Youll end up with a 2mm wide cut.

The other option is to adjust the set on the teeth of the saw to 2mm. You can do it yourself or take it to a sawyer.

Instead of trying to set your back saw to 2mm you could go to a larger toothed cross cut and set that wide.

Thanks for the tips.... especially to you martin... the local saw sharpener can do it with my old tenon saw so I will do that... recut and decrease the tpi allowing for the wider teeth... I have tried the method you set out and it works ok but the old perfectionist in me says something else.... cheers

I've learned to scrape the sides to the desired thickness where they go into the neck. But then a 1 mm cut is a bit thin. Can't you set it like 1.5 and then do the scraping method?
BTW, if you scrape, do it on the inside (pretty obvious, but worth mentioning).
