Latest Superstrat build

Post by demonx » Tue Jul 30, 2013 4:55 pm

I haven't posted for a while so heres a quick video to make up for it!

This is Part 1 to a short series I'm doing on a current build (it's a customer order so not for sale)

Hope you enjoy. There'll be more to come, if I forget to post them here they'll be on my facebook page for sure.

I really like watching how builders do things, and you don't see too many electric builds on the forum. look forward to the rest.

cheers

Thanks guys.

Paul, I picked that track as it's pretty relaxed/smooth and guitar based and happens to be a lot lighter that the music I normally listen to, I may just add some devil music to the next video just for you! :)

Hi Allan,

I have a mate that's into seven string electrics , he built one himself out of Blackhearted Sasafras , that I swear has a Hologram of the Devil in it , he listens to that sort of music, he sent it over for a set up after it had settled in, out of curosity I measured the scale length............. Yep it was 666  when he came to collect it he said "how much do I owe you" I replied " thirty bucks for the setup and three hundred for the exorcism I needed done on my shed".

Bastard only gave me $30     .

Was it all sassafras or just the body?

I've been wanting to use sass for a neck to see what it's like for a while now

Hi Allan,

I don't think I would be using it for a neck , I have never seen a wood react to moisture and humidity light BHS , I once put some titebond on a 2.5mm vener of BHS turned around to grap a Block and some clamps and in those few seconds it had rolled up like a newspaper, it really moves around with humidity and moisture, so I would it's not so suitable for a neck.

That's just my very humble opinion , and I'm happy to stand corrected.

Cheers,
Paul .

I've made three guitars with sassafras headstocks scarfed onto other neck timbers, none of them has had issues, one of them touring up and down the country from hot to cold climates, but it isn't a full neck.

The other two are still in my possession and like I said, no problems.

If you hadn't noticed the "budget" production, the video's are actually just clips I filmed on my mobile phone and cropped together on the free windows movie maker program!

I dont own a video camera and the camera angles are limited as I just sit the iphone on a bench as I cannot tripod mount it yet

I've ordered a $2.00 plastic fitting to tripod mount the iphone however it hasnt arrived yet! Maybe next guitar?

I'm basically trying to make do with what I have as I'd rather spend the money that a fancy video camera would cost on tools!

Part 3 should be up next week. I haven't had a chance to touch the guitar since last video clip, so it's still in clamps.

No guitar updates today, its Sunday, my day off, but here is a new timber pic ... this is slabs from an Ash tree that was cut down at the property where I grew up. It's not quite ready to be used, but it'll sit around and look good in the workshop until it is! Not the most exciting timber, but I used to climb this tree as a kid and one day I'll be able to play it as a guitar!

You said that you had a problem aiming your phone for filming [I haven't checked the video's yet] but I thought that this might work for you. You could mount this gadget on a mic stand or something similar.
I saw this phone holder on TV but bought this one from a $2.00 type store and of course it does not stick to anything in the car, I did not expect much for $7.00. But it's good in the workshop, I use it if I'm using the phone at times for tuning but it would work for filming too.

Taffy, if you notice the last video some angles started to appear. I bought a $2.00 iphone tripod mount from eBay and it arrived last week. Means I can get a bit closer to the action, show more detail

Really enjoying these vids.

Just curious about the weight at the end. Is that to counter back bowing from fretting?

Thanks!

The weight is to simulate string tension after fretting and before levelling.

When tuned, string tension averages about 7 to 8 kg, variables obviously include scale length, string guage, tuning etc, but we're talking averages here, so if I dangle 10 kg at the center of the scale with both the body and headstock supported, then its approximate to tuned tension and then some.

If the frets are going to move/settle or anything during tune up, then this will get it to happen before I level the frets, meaning that I'll have a more efficient fret level (in theory!).

A lot of people have fancy adjustable jigs bought or homemade to do this with gauges etc, a lot of people string the guitar up and leave it for a few days and then un assemble. I've heard of guitar factories using weights, but I'm unsure of their exact application, this is just my version. I find this the much simpler, much easier method than jigs or assembly & unassembly.

Today was another "no work done in the shop" day.

Travelled out of town into the big smoke to pick up some new workshop accessories and some timber.

A couple massive room air filters in an attempt to save my lungs:

and a bit of new stock to play with:

African Magohany
Victrorian Blackwood
Tasmanian Blackwood
Queensland Maple
Black Walnut
Brazilian Walnut
Rimu
American Ash
Sycamore

Should keep me going for a while.
