.070" (1.78mm) Bearing for Weiss binding

Post by Kim Strode » Wed Aug 14, 2013 12:42 pm

I started routing my Weissenborn for binding today and I'm missing the most accurate bearing size. I've got one too big, and one too small - it's always the way!

Although I can make do, I'm asking if anyone can lend me a .070" (1.78mm) bearing (Stewmac Catalogue Number 1298-070 ). I only need it for a day or two and can post it back immediately. I'd order one for Stewmac, but orders are taking around 3-4 weeks at the moment.

Thanks

If I could edit the above post I would, but can't work out how!

To add to the above. I tested the router with bearing on a scrap of wood and everything looked great. But when I did a cut on the actual guitar, the groove was too deep. Went to plan 'B' and used a different bearing and now the groove is not deep enough. An option is to thin down the binding, but now I have two differing binding channels and thought a different bearing might present less of a issue.

Gday Kim , I don't know what sizes are there but I did buy a swag of bearings from stew mac when I set up the kit .
I could have a squiz tomorrow for ya . Benefit is there would be no need for postage .

I was in the same situation as you, and I just wrapped the bearing in a layer of cellotape until I got the right size, might be useful if you are dodgie like me.

Cheers

I've also used tape on the router bit bearing to change the diameter and it worked well. I read somewhere that aluminium (aluminum) tape was good for this purpose (maybe that is what Stewmac have) and I tracked some down on ebay from a US supplier - a few strips for a few $. The next weekend, Aldi was selling a large roll of aluminium adhesive tape for about $4.

I think the thickness is about 0.3mm.

PS. Aldi's also sells double sided tape from time to time and I found that it is also as good as the 3m stuff.

Do you wrap it so that it overlaps itself of do you need to butt joint the wraps? Serious question.

I prefer to overlap the ends of the tape.....I just love it when the router goes bumpity bump and I also love the pretty scalloped binding channel it leaves behind :D

Good thought re the Aluminium tape, I have a few rolls from making my own truss rods over the years. The copper adhesive backed screening foil my work also.

Butt joint the wraps and offset joint for each layer if more than one layer. Any unevenness or gaps will affect how router registers off side of the instrument :)
