Post by vandenboom » Mon Dec 30, 2013 9:24 pm

I have been searching for places that sell precut MOP letters to be inlaid but have only been able to find one...
www.luthiersupply.com/letterstyle.html

Just wondered if anyone out there knows of other suppliers.
thanks. Frank.

Hi Rod
I had looked at their site but they don't offer 'standard' letters, so I would have to provide them with a format as you did. I recall you got him to cut a quantity of the same thing which made it more cost effective.
In my case, it's a single job : L E O N I E
I can get these 6 letters in a basic style from luthiersupply.com for about $25-$30 which is pretty reasonable really.

On other matters Rod, it's about time we caught up again, but I'm off on my annual 10-day cycle tour into the mountains on Thu. Wodonga to Melbourne via Omeo, Dargo, Licola & Jamieson. Couple of hills to go up and down in that lot. Will call u after I get back.
Cheers. Frank.

Send me an email of exactlly what you want and I can get my son to do it for you, hes on holidays at the moment, so simply cost of material and postage

For proper commercial intricate work, I would recommend Labels Extreme, he does nice work and very fairly priced, I use him regularly myself, some jobs are too intricate and time consuming and on a business sense its more cost effective for me to farm that work out than to do it myself

If you don't mind O.S. Frank, DePaule have a stack of standard lettering HERE

DePaule are good quality etc, but their wait times can be quite extended if its a item he doesn't have in stock. I recommend them, but definitely not if you're in a hurry unless its a stock item.

I've had to wait 3 months for an engraved MOP truss rod cover. His custom stuff from memory gets done in Vietnam even though he's USA based.

All of DePaule's pearl comes out of Vietnam, that's how he's able to export because he doesn't have to meet the expensive legal requirements the American border people impose on other suppliers out of the states. His office is still states based which I believe is run by one of his sons now, but all they do is the paperwork and orders. Some really nice work comes out of his store. I ordered a couple of uke rosettes (just plain rings) which they didn't have in stock at that time, I seem to remember it took six weeks for delivery but I had plenty of other stuff to get on with on the uke so it didn't bother me too much. They were cut in sections but matched and cut so well that I had a hard job telling that it wasn't a one piece ring. I'm guessing his 'standard' stock range are all laser cut but the one off stuff, hand cut by a little Vietnamese person.
For this exercise however Frank,I'd take Steve up on his offer though, sounds like an excellent deal!

Thanks everyone for your info.
I always like finding out about local suppliers, so thanks Steve for Labels Extreme link. Some amazing stuff there. He appears to make the inlays for Hancock up in Mt Tamborine.

Steve, I am interested in asking your son to do it. I have passed on the DePaule link to the person that this guitar is for. Once she chooses a design, I will be in touch to see if he is still able to do it.
Thank you. Frank.
