Stewmac sheilding paint drying time in hot weather?

Post by slowlearner » Thu Jan 16, 2014 8:54 pm

Near on 100degF here in Western Sydney today (37degC). Put the first coat of shielding paint on. It's water based. Surely in this heat I don't have to wait 24hrs (like the can says) to recoat?

I don't usually adhere to their guidelines anyway Pete, once the coat has dried to an even dull grey I'll rub a finger over it. If I can feel a smooth surface and my finger doesn't 'drag' or clag up in any way and my fingertip has a fine graphite powder on it as opposed to a lumpy coating, it should be good to go for another coat. I don't time it but I'd say I usually find I can recoat anytime after 12 hours. I think Stewmac's 24hr recommendation is probably a bum covering exercise to stop people blaming them and their product for a poor application because the previous coat wasn't properly dry and a second coat pulled or dragged at the first coat. 24 hours would be a safe blanket time to cover most climates and people's differing shop conditions I would say.
If your shop is at 37 I'm surprised it's staying wet long enough for you to brush it on!

Was a bit like that actually. Bass is together now, just waiting on a few wiring joints and good to go!
