Can I bring NZ timbers back to Oz?

Post by Wayde Christie » Wed Aug 05, 2015 5:26 pm

Hi all,

I'm in NZ for a couple weeks and I'm wondering if I can bring timbers back to Australia. Anyone know the rules?

Also, and most importantly, where can I get some? :)

Cheers,

Wayde.

Shouldn't be a big issue as long as you declare it and there's no bark or worm/bug holes in the stuff. And pack it so you can open it easily and quickly for inspection.

Where can you get some?? How should I know...Im an Aussie

"Imported articles need to be clean, free of bark, insects, soil or other contaminants (look for holes and sawdust as this may indicate that your article contains insect pests). "

As far as the "where" it very much depends on where you are visiting Wayde, if you are in the upper North Island then there is Rarefind Timbers in Hamilton. Any further north and Christian maybe worthwhile contacting to find out all the 'good spots'. Not aware of anything south of Hamilton that specialises in natives cut for luthiery, there are timber merchants such as Timspecs and BBS timbers that do do nz timbers but you'd have to spend sometime searching through their racks to find a suitable piece near or on the quarter, but be aware that they cater more for boatbuilders so it's more about the appearance and tend to be more flatsawn.

Hi Wade,

You shouldn't have any problems bringing in the timbers, make sure they are machined, waxed ends etc probably best to have receipts and names of the timbers handy too. As for sources, they are a bloody mystery to me also! If you like treasure hunting you could spend hours searching through timber stacks and fine something that way. Like Nick said the only timber I've seen machined for luthiery is rarefind.co.nz
Let me know if you need a hand to figure out what woods work well etc.

We let the Aussies win that one, after all what with the dismal Ashes display and the netball we figured you deserve something.

A few years ago I bought in some native NZ timber in my suitcase. I declared it and the customs blokes never even looked at it. They were far more interested in what might be in the tread of my shoes.

Sorry It was in reply to Nick's nipple warmers. Out of context that must have sounded odd
