Spherical fret ends

Post by simso » Thu Jun 29, 2017 10:19 pm

Anyone interested in how to on this, I ask because it takes a bit longer to photo tutorial and write things up, but happy to do it if of interest to others.

Have a refret to do tomorrow where the customer specifically wanted spherical fret ends, having already done a how to refret tutorial I could do an addendum or whatever they call that thing where you add to an existing process.

As always its a, how I do it process.

For note

Have done a few other walk through tutorials of late, but they are such generic ones I have not posted the links here, example removing a guitar back, how to make kerfing etc.

Didn't someone in the US try and patent spherical fret ends?? I recall a controversy running over same a few years back on one of the US forums.

Yes, I would be interested. I've done it by hand using files with the frets in the fingerboard. Gets the job done but nearly impossible to keep the ends lined up so the ends lay in a line when sighted. Minor point I guess, but an element of craftsmenship I suppose.

I wouldn't mind seeing how it's done Steve, I've been thinking about giving it a try. Wayne

Cool cool, I will take photos today...

Its a pretty easy thing to do, and I make it even easier again :), to the point it made me question whether it was worth doing an addendum to my standard refret tutorial

Will post it up this afternoon when I sit down and collate the photos as the day goes by.

Yep - Steve, I would like to see your method also. I did it on my last build and it ended up OK but was a PITA, and I am sure my approach was not as effective or efficient as it could have been.

Martin, we had that episode where Sylvan what's-his-name showed off his spherical fret ends and asked people to pay him $50, or whatever, before he would reveal the secret method to them. I hope he got rich off that - but he didn't get my money

That is shameful is it not, the world would be a better place with the sharing of knowledge.

Somewhere in a corner of the ANZLF vault you might find a hemispherical-end fret tutorial by Kim Hickey. (But, yes, the more the merrier.)

{edit, to add:}
OK, I went searching:

Here's Kim's: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=793

and one by Rod True: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2861
Another damn Yank!

OK. Using that dremel tool attachment looks a whole lot easier and faster than my past method with files and wet/dry paper. Thanks for the tute. My $50 cheque is in the mail.
