New build
Don't laugh!!!! i've started new build, even after i'd sworn off this despicable time consuming habit of making very expensive sawdust.
Well what can i say? you go to a guitar show[ arguably the biggest in the country] sell some stock and pick up an order all in the same week, you can't ignore that can ya hey?
So i've got the sides finished and just starting on the neck, this one is a copy [ with some small aesthetic variations of the cherry burst build from last year.
so when i've got something to show you i'll post pics on here!!
Cheers
Rod.
PS can any of the mods turn that pic up the right way? i don' know how it got like that!

Re: New build
Thanks for reminding me Bruce, I don't think this build is going to stuff my plans up too much, I still have the small landscaping job in the back to finish and then it's the kitchen, I reckon I can reserve the weekends for the domestic stuff and just loofer before and after work.

Re: New build
It's a beautiful guitar. One day I'll make an archrival style guitar. But first a silly question. Why are the tops carved? Why not steam/heat pressed or steam shaped a bit like sides are?

Archtop. Not archrival. Phone autocorrect is the bane of my existence.

Re: New build
David,a typical arched plate be it front or back varies in thickness from 5-6mm down to 3mm at the thinnest point it would be impossible to bend the timber in every direction around the 360 degrees required without it cracking or splitting just about everywhere. a bit of homework for you, take a piece of aluminium foil and cut a circle about 30mm in diameter and place it over a milk bottle and push it down into the neck of the bottle with your thumb, now take it out and have a look at the shape of the foil, nice and smooth on the crest and bloody wrinkly around the edge, the foil didn't crack but it still looks crap around the edges, and the foil is much more forgiving than timber.
So in a nut shell!! it's easier to carve arch tops to shape than press them into shape,,,,,,,,
i hope this answers your question..

Re: New build
From my understanding there were alot of reasons pressed laminated archtops appeared - reduced production costs, ability to create a more uniform product, stiffer tops and reduced tendancy for feedback are a few reasons I've seen fielded. As for differences in tonal quality there are a some great sounding laminated top archtops but I think it would be hard to match the sound of a hand made solid archtop.

Re: New build
I'm referring here only to Davids question regarding the bending of a solid top, laminated tops are totally different animal which I might add I have been known to use in the past, in fact the two guitars referred to in this topic are laminated tops and backs.rocket wrote: ↑Thu Aug 31, 2017 10:22 pmDavid,a typical arched plate be it front or back varies in thickness from 5-6mm down to 3mm at the thinnest point it would be impossible to bend the timber in every direction around the 360 degrees required without it cracking or splitting just about everywhere. a bit of homework for you, take a piece of aluminium foil and cut a circle about 30mm in diameter and place it over a milk bottle and push it down into the neck of the bottle with your thumb, now take it out and have a look at the shape of the foil, nice and smooth on the crest and bloody wrinkly around the edge, the foil didn't crack but it still looks crap around the edges, and the foil is much more forgiving than timber.

Re: New build
That looks really good, did you hand make that one.
The laminated sides, are you buying them laminated and bending or laminating them into the mold
One of the local store owners has asked me to teach them how to build a 175, so ironically I happen to need to make a mold. Having seen the body profile you had, it looked tidy and neat.
I am currently drawing the body up in cad, to cnc make a body mold for him, personally I am going to make a Benedetto Archtop at the same time whilst he is doing his 175.

Re: New build
Steve ,, no cmc's in my shop, i do everything with the old elbow grease, make a template, transfer to mdf cut it out on the bandsaw, refine the bumps with files etc.simso wrote: ↑Fri Sep 01, 2017 7:14 pmThat looks really good, did you hand make that one.

I bend my sides and laminate them inside the mould, all my instruments are done that way.
