Applying HHG

Post by Allen » Fri Feb 09, 2018 1:23 pm

This suggestion was mentioned several weeks ago on a private forum of luthiers I belong to when one person was considering to start using HHG.

These accordian bottles are really inexpensive and I just so happened to have recieved one of these in an order for other supplies. I thought it looked handy even if I never used it.

Turns out it's hands down the best tool for applying HHG to braces. Loaded up with 315 gram strength, the bead comes out easy in a nice thin ribbon that stays were you put it with enough material that when you press the brace in place you get nice squeeze out.

I'll never go back to using a brush on braces again.

Where do you get them? Do you keep it in a hot water glue pot? How big are they? Do you clean it every day or can it be re used over and over, without the accordion section becoming clogged with old glue and hard to clean or useless? How much do they cost? Good for white luthiers glue and titebond I would imagine? Cheers! Ross.

Haven't cleaned it yet. Have refilled it several times as I've used it to build 4 ukes over the last month. When you let the accordian section expand it sucks the tip clean. It fits in the palm of your hand.

Yes in the water bath. You can add some stainless steel nuts to sit in the bottom to help keep it upright in the bath.

This one came from Timbercon and was around $6.

Looks like you can get them from Carbitec (Veritas brand) with variable thickness needles too.
