Materials pricing

Post by Ormsby Guitars » Fri Feb 16, 2018 11:28 am

Curious to see what others are paying for materials.

Truss rods
Fret wire per guitar
Body blanks (swamp ash, limba, Mahogany, Alder, etc)
Fretboards (ebony, Wenge, ziricote, macassar ebony, flame maple)
Necks (sizes? Maple, mahogany, etc)
Etc etc

We’ve been able to leverage off our production line guitars to negotiate hard on certain things like fretwire. Our Korean line uses Jescar wire. Retail is $65USD per pound (stainless). The group buy this forum did 4 years ago saw the price come in around $45usd per lb. A decent saving. But there is more... adding our AUS requirements to our Korean orders, see the price drop to $13 usd per lb. AND they’ll pre cut each fret to a specific size, AND cut back the tang for binding, free. That’s $4-4.75 per guitar. Ready to fit (saves an hour of cutting).

Material costs are very important, especially if you’re selling instruments. We do electrics, but acoustic guys, join in.

(Mods: I’m not selling, or offering anything for sale)

I cannot contribute perry, I am almost out of the building game, maybe 3-6 Guitars a year now. It’s already February and I’m part build on the first acoustic for the year.

Have been referring people to Rad and Ray of late. So my purchases are way down and I pass the current cost straight to the customer.

You know what, it’s kind of good in a way, overheads are down, stock is down, yay..

Repair work is through the roof..

Not that my 2 cents helps any but that's a damned fine service they offer Perry with the individual fret/s tang cutting etc.
