Quite honestly I am not surprised at this. The guitars they churn out these days are of average quality. There is only so far you can go with selling a gold logo.

A few points in their favour:
You generally don't have to replace pickups in a Gibson to get great tone.
You can guarantee the finish will wear, chip off and craze like a vintage guitar.
You can be certain if you bump the head stock in a certain way it will drop off the guitar.

On the downside the fit and finish is appalling compared to cheaper copies available. Most who play seriously won't have a lot of money tied up in one VOS Gibson. They'll own several copies they have hot rodded at half the total cost of the "real thing"

An old neighbour, a scotsman, once said to me "tha should nae mess aroond with something tha ken nuthing aboot". Shoulda stuck to making great guitars the rest said.
