Trev’s Falcate Bracing to Taylor’s New V brace

Post by simso » Sun Nov 04, 2018 11:14 pm

Gee, they look awfully familiar. Whilst different they are not too different.

Taylor’s reverse v appears to be based size wise around the sound port, where as trev’s curves in more and then arches out. One thing you have to give the company, attention to detail is always exemplary, artistic in its approach.

Both sets of braces and tone bars are kept short from the sides as well.

You were ahead of your times by the looks of it Trev.

I personally know nothing about falcate bracing.

Cole Clarke’s reverse v is a bit rough, I think it has a lot to do with using cnc to carve the tops up.

They too relief carve the border of the top.

While I give credit to taylor for doing something different, at least different to the other big name factories. I've had 2 people drop in to my workshop with new v-class guitars, a 600 and an 800 series.

One of these guys placed an order with me for a commission falcate SS after playing a demo one of mine off the hanger (he didnt like the taylor afterwards).
The other is now a student of mine making his own falcate SS guitar.

Apart from these 2 I havent heard a higher end taylor up close for a number of years, so its difficult for me to compare sound wise the difference between their previous and new bracing, but to my ears the vclass guitars sounded like your typical mid to higher end factory X braced guitar eg bright, thin, and boring. :toi . Chalk and cheese compared to a well made falcate SS guitar.

I’ve only heard one of the new Taylor’s with this bracing and I much preferred the sound of my own X braced build when I compared them side by side.

To be fair though the Taylor was a Koa top and mine Cedar, so it’s apples to oranges. The Taylor didn’t sound bad though.
