Neck wood

Post by limehills » Wed Sep 18, 2019 7:48 am

Alright so I've been on the look out for new neck woods, so far I've only been using black walnut, but I'm starting to run out.... I've got some oak here and was wondering if this would make a decent neck, some Rata too. What's everyone's go to neck timber??

I was also wondering what NZ native timbers make a good neck.
Laurence.

I use 3 species of neck timber:
Qld maple
Fijian mahogany
&
Toona (classical / flamenco only)

I have in the past used new guinea rosewood, but i dont like the way it carves.

Cant help you with nz natives, sorry.

Hi Laurance,
I use matai. Rata is a wee bit on the heavy side for a neck.

Rarefind Timber (not far from you in Hamilton) has some interesting neck timber. He is not cheap, apparently, but might be worth a look.

Classical or steel string?

Cheers
Richard
