Alternatives to Mirotone for clear hi gloss finish

Post by seeaxe » Tue May 12, 2020 5:13 pm

Hi peeps. I have one classical to finish. I'm going to use French Polish on the soundboard which means i don't need a lot of lacquer. I have used rattle cans before with variable results. I woukd like to improve on that. My son in law actually knows how to spray stuff and has offered to do it for me. I have access to a compressor and guns etc. I can spray in the garage its reasonably well contained.

But...

While Mirotone appears to be the gold standard finish and they sell it here, the minimum i can buy will cost 180 nz pesos of which i might use $20 worth on the one guitar.

Are there any reasonable alternatives for a sprayed application or do i just suck it up and spend the money??????

Would appreciate input from those that spray finish their instruments.

Cheers
Richard

I use Wurth spray cans clear high gloss or semi gloss. Works great and really quick drying. Just put light coats on and it's really easy to work with.

The Gold Standard would be Mirothane Polyurethane. But you'll be up for even more than Mirotone lacquer. It's also much more difficult to spray unless you are competent with a gun.

You will be very hard pressed to find a harder, yet more flexible finish.

Ill call them tomorrow when they should be back at work

Scratch that request Allen.

Just called Mirotone nz who were super helpful and have ordered the pc3220 which should be delivered in a couple of days. Have to say that was great service. Ridiculously small delivery charge.
The fact that it will keep in the can for a while is a major plus.

Better get cracking on the next guitar.
