Tonewood in Alaska?

Post by joel » Sun Jul 11, 2021 7:39 pm

I'm heading to Alaska for work. Does anyone know of some reputable tonewood suppliers up that way? I might be able to bring back a small package of top sets for my future humble building efforts.

Alaska Speciality Woods are up there. They specialise in salvaged and blown down trees. Don’t know exactly where they are but look them up.

Ohhhh travel. How exotic! I would love to go to Prince Whales Is and met Brent and his crew and see their operations.

Thanks for the input guys. According to Google Maps, Prince of Wales Island is a 38hr drive from Eielson Air Force Base... Was hoping for something a little closer than that. Unsure if I can get stuff posted to me at this Base.

Just a quick update. I emailed the guys at Alaska Specialty Woods, and discovered that I could get packages delivered to the Air Force Base I'm deployed to. Brent answered my delivery question quickly, and once I place the order for 6 tops (2A light curl or quilt Sitka, and 2A WRC) and brace wood it was delivered within a week. All in all, I'm very happy with the communication, speed of dispatch, and quality of product from Alaska Specialty Wood. Would recommend.

Now I've just got to fit it all in my suitcase for the trip home...

Make a couple of suitcases out of the wood...that way you wont have to worry about declaring the wood

When I've been back in Canada and bought timber I've purchased a cheap "Hockey Gear Bag" to fill up. Can usually get them at a thrift store for a couple of dollars. Its then easy to just open this up at customs when you get back to Australia when they want to inspect the timber.
