Glue not sticking

Post by rocket » Mon Jul 26, 2021 7:02 pm

Hi all, has anyone experienced something similar to this?
Closed the box on an archtop recently, Huon pine on Blackwood using HHG but the bloody top didn’t stick very well, on inspection with a thin blade it popped right off, glue adhered to the sides and lining ok but nearly no evidence of glue on the top! I’m thinking the natural oils in the Huon could be the problem, maybe a clean up with scraper and cleaning fluid will be the go?

Go Covid safe you all

yep the oils in huon pine can be a real problem.
When i've worked with it i cleaned the surface with acetone 10mins prior to glueing.

Thanks Steve, yeah i thought as much although i've used Huon a couple of times and not had any issues with it but on those occasions i used Titebond and not the HHG i wonder if that is a contributing factor? i wouldn't have thought so.

Cheers
Rod.

I use Huon often and never had a problem. Got a soprano on the go right now so will have a close look this morning.

Just wondering if maybe the heat from the HHG helps draw the natural oils of the Huon to the surface? Just saying!

I only use HHG when gluing up the body. The soprano I'm working on had the binding channels routed yesterday and there was no problem at all.

I've heard builders saying that Huon Pine is difficult to glue, but that has never been my experience.

Oil in the Huon as noted above. You can try wiping acetone or meths on gluing surfaces if using HHG. I've Titebond fairly good even on oily woods.

Thanks everyone for your advice I have cleaned all remaining glue from relevant surfaces and wiped down with Shellite and re closed this box using Titebond this time and progressed on to routing binding channels, no sign of the top lifting off this time.

Cheers

I'm no expert on glues, could be way off and happy to be proven wrong here.

I believe titebond original soaks a tiny amount into the surfaces of the 2 mateing pieces of wood, while protein glues (Hide glue etc) sits as a layer between the 2 surfaces.
In which case titebond will/should provide a better bond for oily timbers.
