New Mandolin

Post by sebastiaan56 » Mon Jul 11, 2022 1:02 pm

A new German style mandolin. Local and exotic timbers, Sitka Spruce, Fijian Mahogany, Silky Oak, Arizona Ironwood. Strung with Aquila Red Mandolin strings. Just strung up this morning so it will take a week or so for things to settle and I can find out what kind of voice it has. Built from the plans in Alfred Woll’s excellent book.

The last one I posted turned into a bit of a disaster as I rushed the build. Lesson learnt.

That looks amazing. The skill in getting those ribs shaped is very impressive.

I am interested in the fixture a t the bottom. Are strings anchored into it? I have only ever seen a metal attachment point.

Cheers Dave

It’s a bit of a learning curve but the fundamentals are just geometry. Think segments of a mandarin or orange and you understand it. Making it requires a fair amount of detailed piece by piece fitting. Getting it really even is the tricky bit. Thanks!
