I was amazed too

Post by Taffy Evans » Tue Jun 27, 2023 12:56 pm

After many years of being involved in the repairing and building of stringed instruments, one can imagine the vast number of tools, jigs, and machines I have accumulated, as we all do. This of course can run into many thousands of dollars over time. Unlike my son, who recently took up building guitars, I started making most of my own tools, jigs, and machines myself. My son the other hand sold his motorbikes and equipped his workshop very quickly; however, he did start off making his own “stuff”, and still does. But he was off to a good start.

Quite a lot of the jigs and tools I have built or modified are available from the major instrument parts suppliers, some became available after I had created my own, some I made from the ideas of others, and some I made out of necessity, and nobody sells them, :D . Yet.

Recently I did a stock take of the machines and tools in my workshop, and the thought occurred to me that it would be fun to list what I had bought and what I had made but could have bought. Wow, what a surprise I got…..

Ninety-six items listed in the catalogs of the major lutherie retailers I had made for myself. Some large and expensive and some small and low cost but added to the list for fun. Also just for fun, I did a costing. At today’s price, just over 12000.00. Not including freight.
I have not included in the list the two machines I started with, a nine-inch Makita hand saw converted to a table saw, and a shopmade thickness sander, both I used for ten years before buying more professional machines.

I should mention that some of the tools I made myself were replaced with store-bought versions over time.
I have not included the dozens of shop-made Orchestral instrument-related tools and jigs.

I have just come in from the workshop and I was looking round and thinking Jeez there's a lot of stuff in here. Whether I would get up to that figure I'm not sure, and I'm not sure I really want to know!

It has built up over the years so has never felt like a big hit, and yes many of the specialist stuff is shop made. It wouldn't do for any of us to cost our time however!

What I should be doing is getting in there more and using them.

Cheers Dave
