Notches for braces in the rims

Post by Duct Tape » Tue Jan 16, 2024 6:33 am

I’m getting ready to attach the backs to the rims. I’ve seen two ways to cut the notches in the rims, one which preserves the side material and another where the notch goes all the way across so that the brace end is exposed (until binding is done).

I’ve read that the first way, assuming one leaves the brace end a little short of touching the remaining side material, might limit any wood motion and pushing out the bindings.

Would appreciate any advice m

Thanks much

I thin ends of my main transverse braces down to 2mm and run them through the sides.....as per Gore and Gilets books.

Hi, I have always used the first option. My braces stop at the sides and I trim the braces to fit. This way I find that when the plates are fitted the sides are better held in place, never had any issues.

Whatever the most difficult thing to do... that's what I usually end up doing.

Thank you for your replies. I’m building three OO cutaways and might try different techniques.
