They work a treat. I use mine for laying out the nut on every instrument. Makes the job for students a lot easier too.

Looks very nice, what have you put in place to allow for string thickness compensation

I get asked this quite a lot..You have to remember that if you space out the strings at the bass end of the nut you have to cramp up the strings at the treble end ..I don't do this co's finger tips press down on the centre line of the string..But!! if you want to compensate this is how you do it with the gauge.
I have sold a few of these and I didn't have instructions printed out on how to set for compensation ...so they weren't included..so here it is in a picture ...You just release the M3 grubscrews holding the pins and reset them at an angle.

Joking aside, nice bit of kit Tim.

I just read that you are selling these little gems.

Would I please be able to place an order for one of these, but with seven marking pins?

It's OK, I found it! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Luthier-tools-6 ... 3f3e3b837e for anybody interested (by me posting the link you can't be accused of self promotion  ).
Hmmmm I like the nut scratcher idea, it appeals to our antipodean ways

Hope you sell dozens of em Tim. Can the compensation (set at the angle a la your sketch) be adjusted on them all?

I reckon since Tim first joined us a few years back, he's clearly demonstrated his intent is to bring more to the craft than he will ever take...Please feel free to post relevant links and prices for your products Tim...especially if you offer our members a quid or two off... 8)

Seriously,..feel free to post your links Tim. The ANZLF's seemingly firm rules concerning commercial promotion have always been about sparing our members the hard-sell and to encouraging confidence in the credibility of our discussions via the removal of incentives for people to join our group solely for their own personal gain and your definitely not one of 'them' mate.. :D

Cheers

these are actually pretty common and used for lots of layout applications. Your work was flawless , from one machinist to another great job.

Damn.

I bought one of these AGES ago, and this thread reminded me. Need to use it. The apprentice spend three hours laying out machinehead holes the other day :(

I made a video of the assembly procedure of one of these 6 point gauges ... 41 components to put together in total.

Nice little Vid Ken, think if I ever decided to go this route, even though I'm a Tool and Diemaker myself, I'd buy one from you! Repetitive tasks such as assembling just one of these and I would be a cot case. Well done but can you suggest a way I can now erase that bloody backing tune from my internal playlist! It's similar to the first tune that pops into your head upon waking....It takes until lunchtime for the damn thing to fall out of your head!
