The SJ is finished

Post by Dave Anderson » Tue Dec 04, 2007 9:30 am

Got her done yesterday and shes sounding good so far. I posted these over on the OLF too so if'n you seen em there........
It's Black walnut back and sides with a Lutz top and brazilian trim.
First sound port I've done and I really like it so far. It's like my own little moniter. Carbon fiber rods in the neck-its straight as an arrow!
The bridge pins are bone-that's all I had. I might change them.I just don't like how they look.
I finished it with 10 coats of nitrocellulose lacquer,7 on the top.

Dave, that's a great looking guitar! Beautiful workmanship.

Hey, you know that photo that shows the side port looks so natural, I think my brain just flipped. I have seen a lot of ports, and I think this one pushed me over the edge. Now, this looks so natural, that not having a port would look "wrong."

I agree 100% with that statement, the more i look at it, the more i want one on my current build, it just looks like it was meant to be there and just flows well aestheticly!

Dave, you got it man!

Yeh Dave, what the others said.

At what part of the build did you put in the sound port. Mine was before I bent the sides, and I don't think I would do that again. I'm thinking for next time, once the linings are in and before the top and back go on.

Great job Dave.

You always get everything in the right spots.

Every guitar I've seen of yours has been tasty, tasty, tasty.

Dave
Very nice looking guitar! A big thumbs up on your rosette and choice of your tonewood combo. Black walnut is a great tonewood, I feel it is one of those try it and you'll like types of wood. Nice work!

Absolutley beautiful guitar Dave . The very cool rosette really suits the instrument.
I too, am a convert to soundports. I spent a whole lot of time making a stop for mine so that I could have it open or closed ,,, guess what , the stop lives in the case pocket and I never use it. Your port looks very elegant Dave and not too massive like others I have seen. They needn't be large . Mine is 7/8 " and works well, without raising the main resonance more than a semitone.

Great work Dave it's a real stunner

Cheers , Craig

Thanks so much guys.I really appreciate all the nice comments.

Serge- yeah is does sound clear and loud. Next? A L-00 from curley honduran mahogany and adi top ! I can't wait to get going on that.

Allen- I got some advice from Tim McKnight on the sound port.He cuts them after its together and pores filled so thats how I did it.Tim said with a basic roundish shape it was not necessary to double the area of the port.

Craig- On my port ,I actually had it designed a little smaller But I kind of got the shape out of whack so I had to sand it a little more than I wanted. But it came out OK,not too big like some I've seen.

Tom- I love working with walnut too.
