Blackwood 018

Post by ozziebluesman » Tue Mar 13, 2012 12:22 pm

Hi there,

This guitar is for my son who is a working musician. I sent it off with him a few weeks back and it has been used on twenty gigs. I said, tongue in cheek, give it a flogging and play it in a bit. It has a K&K mini western pickup system fitted and he liked the fact that the whole guitar is very responsive when plugged into the PA so it has been subjected to some Tommy Emanual tapping. He brought it back to me all sheepish last week and said there is a noise that sounds like a brace has lifted. I knew this guitar was going to be well played so I built it as strong as possible and I thought surely a brace hasn't lifted. Turned out the fingerboard is vibrating on the top when he taps it. Phewwww!!!! I will get him to gig it for another twenty gigs and once we are both happy with the setup I will spot glue the fingerboard down. Happy ending! fix :D

The guitar is all Blackwood and I must say it sounds damn good. I must thank Bob Connor for picking out a suitable top for me. I have heard other guitars with hardwood tops and they seemed tight sounding and a bit thin to me. This one surprised me and sounded good from the start so I am very pleased. There will be a mp3 of the guitar in the near future.

Top back and sides: Blackwood from Bob Connor

Appointments: Indian Rosewood from Shane at High Mountain Tonewoods

Neck: NGR from Micheal Connor

Machine Heads: Black Schallers

Pickup: K&K Mini Western System

Here are a few pictures for you all and thanks for looking.

Hi Alan,

The guitar looks great! I love the figure in the Blackwood, and it seems like it sounds good too, from your sons usage!
I hope to build an all Blackwood guitar one day, do you have any dimensions you could share? Top thickness, bracing sizes, etc?

Thanks,
GregL.

Awww man! I love this baby and the satin finish (what ratio of flatner did you use?) really sets it all off Alan, you should be well chuffed with your efforts. Is the back & top rounded over or did you have a go at Christian's method of a 'seamless' join, it's just that on my monitor, it's hard to pickup the joins!
I was thinking of having a go with Ziricote on my next build but I've got some of Bob's brilliant Ottaway Blackwood sitting in my stash that may have reason to start looking worried! Blackwood is one of those rare timbers that looks good under a shiny or a flat finish, the colour & grain just jump out no matter what you cover it in.
Great guitar & by the way, the black hardware really finishes it off! :cl :cl :cl :cl :cl
