Baritone Uke - Blackwood and Euro Spruce

Post by Allen » Sat Jun 16, 2012 6:13 pm

This uke has some tweaks to the last one I built, and a set of South Coast Uke Strings (Linear Set) that on this scale length works best tuned GCEA just like a regular tenor etc.

I've been trying to replenish my stock for the Cairns Uke Festival in a couple of weeks and this has been the first instrument that I've been able to add to my stock for quite some time, but I don't think it's going to stay there long. By far the best sounding uke I've built to date.

Body - Blackwood
Top - Euro Spruce
Neck - Spanish Cedar
Fret Board - Gidgee
Bridge - Ebony
Head Plate and Back Graft - Ebony
Finish - Mirotone 3220 Satin over Boat Coat Epoxy for pore fill
Rosette - Koa with sapwood

Awwww man you're really raising the rosette standard around here Allen, I was just getting a few ideas together for a rosette for the Uke build I'm doing at the moment. One look at yours & I can see I'm gonna have to scrap those & lift me game to even get in the same ball park!
Very tidy Uke all round, the headstock just smacks of simple elegance & the sapwood accent down the back's centre. What's not to love?!!!

Nice to hear in church but not in a Mexican prison.

I was round playing this uke last weekend and it is a stunner. Beautifully smooth, harp like tones. I didn't want to put it down. The new back garden's a pretty nice place for a cup of tea and some nice uke too.

Crikey !

Turn my back for five minutes and Allen gives birth to triplets

Lovely Bari Allen. Beautiful rings in the Gidgee and some very colourful striking blackwood - nice to see.

Thanks for the heads up as to South Coast Uke Strings too - I had not come across them before. Now added to my list...

The best news though is hearing you suggest it is your best to date - now that's saying something! And something in the right direction too I might add :D

Any chance of a quick tapping into VA for a 'sonic signature' of this before she disappears? Of course, it would be relevant more to Baritones and your own build style than anything else, but given the lack of data available, it all helps paint a picture - just as Craig is doing.

Jeremy.

I've got a set the Trevor and Gerard's books on the way and will try and find time to read them. But all the stuff you fellows have been talking about is a bit out of my league at the moment. However I have more commissions for this instrument, so perhaps if this one goes soon, I'll have some more down the track when I wrap my head around this stuff.
