#2 FINALLY

Post by nnickusa » Sat Aug 11, 2012 11:29 am

Got to the end this morning.

Details:

Back, side, neck: Blackwood from Steve at Dorrigo Woodworks. Centre strip on the neck is Tassie Oak.
Top: Bought as recycled cedar off eBay, but Michael Connor reckons Redwood.
Bindings: Blackwood with BWB from Tim S.
Bridge, Fretboard, headplates: Pink Gidgee from ALS. Bought a bass board and cut the plates out of the excess, matching the grain. Fretboard bound with blackwood.
Frets: Gold.
Tuners: Gotoh vintage open gear, gold.
Finish: Mirotone 3220.(Needs a better buff, I think).
Inlays: Gold MOP.

Please be kind. I know I have still got things to improve on, but I'm really happy with this one.

Looks great, Nick!
Love the Southern Cross fingerboard inlay!
I can't quite identify the top wood from the photo, looks like it could be Western Red Cedar or Redwood like Micheal said.
Herringbone looks good too.
The blackwood has some nice figure, and the neck looks really curly!

Lovely Instrument Nick. I like the look you have there with the materials you have used. It looks very bespoke indeed:)

Have you used Brass bridge pins in this build? You might want to take them out and listen and see if you can hear a difference with plastic or wood ones as they will be quite a bit lighter. Might be worth a try. If you have the gear to measure the top frequency you could have some fun with that. I am referring to concepts in "the book" by TG. It talks about manipulating the top main mode amongst other things.

Thanks guys.

Greg, the Southern Cross inlay was a bit of a lark. My Missus, the original Brunswick Beauty, had a hand in the design, and preferred a minimalist amount of bling, compared to the OM I built. I really like the gold on the pink gidgee, so i added the cross......

John, I don't have "the book," nor does it look like $200 is coming my way to buy it. Not to mention the equipment. Mate, I have enough trouble just trying to put the damn things together. I did lighten the bridge when I decided on the gold plated brass pins. I have a few other sets, so I'll see if my tone-deaf ear can hear any difference

Two mates have played her today, and both have approved. They are players.

Now, onward and upward. The next awaits!

Cheers,
Nick

Very nice Nick. I built a weissenborn from some wood purchased from Steve and the set looked very much like your dready. Lovely silking and figure. The neck displays beautiful figure. Congratulations mate, a fine build. What's next?

Cheers

Thinline OM cutaway from bear claw sitka, heart rimu back sides and neck, and deciding on the fingerboard, bindings and bridge.

I have lacewood or jarrah. Already made a jarrah burl rosette and headplate, but I don't want too much contrast.

I'm not sure if the lacewood will work? I know it's not usually used, but the guy I got it from reckons he's used it to good effect, thogh I wonder about wear....If I do use it, I'd like to finish it to get maximum effect....

We'll just have to wait and see.

This guitar is modelled for a friend of ours who is a small woman, and plays professionally now after raising her kids, but the dread she uses practically hides her away. I'm not too worried about the acoustic sound, though I want it to be good, as I'm gonna put an LR Baggs I-beam/saddle PUP combo in it....

Very nice Nick you have a right to be happy with yourself. Lots of nice design elements and that neck has some pretty special figure going on 8)
