All Blackwood Concert Uke - J.F. Custom

Post by J.F. Custom » Sat Sep 29, 2012 9:41 pm

Latest off the bench for me.

The first of three current ukulele commissions. This one being the only concert size of the three. No extravagant adornments on this build, just clean lines and matching high grade timbers.

The top, back and sides are all highly figured Blackwood. Likewise the headstock front and back veneers. Neck is some very old quarter sawn Qld Maple I have a little stock left of. Fretboard is IRW as is the bridge, which while still a classically styled tie bridge, is shaped to match the headstock. Bone nut and saddle, Grover tuners and D'Addario Titanium strings.

All the purflings were made from matching blackwood and maple, as were the blackwood bindings and trim. The rosette is also blackwood, however it is tiled from several pieces with the 'flame' flowing around the soundhole. This was done as the customer wanted a more subtle rosette than some I have done previously. However, arranged in this fashion, it refracts the light differently as you move it - so while blending in, it is not without interest in itself. I like the look and effect.

Plays nicely and was shipped off to the customer last week.

So for some pics. Firstly the whole -

All class Jeremy. Did you use the Hard Shellac for this one?

Thanks for the comments and compliments gents. 8)

Yep, blackwood is stunning stuff no doubt - visually and tonally. Pretty happy with how the overall design went.

Craig - No, not hard shellac on this one. This customer specifically requested high gloss/mirror lacquer as the finish - many customers do. So it's regular old Mirotone. I'll get around to the hard shellac at some point though...

Cheers,

Jeremy.
