Falcate Steel String in Maple

Post by Dave M » Wed Mar 09, 2016 8:15 am

I recently strung up my first steel string based on Trevor's medium sized falcate braced design. Tried to stick closely to the model though ineveitably as an amateur I had a few, what did someone call them 'opportunities for design development' ! So there are definitely a few cosmetic issues. BUT it sounds great. It is a real testament to Trevor's design that as an amateur I have been able to produce a guitar that is not only comparable with some commercial models but in some ways betters them.

The first thing that strikes in a side by side comparison is that it has volume. Quite a lot more than a couple of pretty expensive factory models. It has a bright sound with pretty good balance across the strings. The other standout feature is sustain. You could go and have a cup of coffee and the bases would still be ringing. Low damping in the top structure I guess.

It does give you a warm glow when people who try it say 'I want one. Please make another one'.

I'll post some of the analysis in the book section in due course. Meanwhile a few pics:

That is a fantastic job. Well done. I'm sure no one will find any flaws except for you.

Thanks Martin. D'you reckon I'm good for a stripe or two. Corporal perhaps?

I reckon I am part of a small army core putting out the message for both the Gore designs and for non tropical timbers in the UK. Surprised how few people who have played the guitar have objected to the maple body. Maybe people just have to be persuaded to play and listen rather than look.

Cheers Dave
