Milo and Ancient Spruce Concert

Post by Allen » Sat Dec 09, 2017 7:15 am

Milo is from Hawaii and rather difficult to get. The Ancient Spruce comes from a tree found while excavating for a factory in Alaska and is carbon dated at 3000 years old when it was buried.

This is a custom build for a client that has Hawaiian ancestry, so the Milo is significant to her, and well, she just fell in love with the Ancient Spruce. The bindings are curly Blackwood. Fret board has a subtle streak of brown that matches the Milo that runs up it and continues into the peg head veneers.

This is a 15" concert, with a coumpound radius of 12" - 16" on the fret board. A K&K Aloha Twin pickup and finished is high gloss polyurethane.

I know what to expect every time I open one of your posts - but sometimes I still get a surprise. Like this one. I had never heard of Milo, except as something to put in my milk. It is very beautiful. And the story of the ancient spruce is fascinating, but I always thought the colour a bit hard to tie into an overall aesthetic plan. However, this combination works very well for a totally unique instrument. You must be loving your work at the moment!

Thanks Mark.

Yes, the Ancient Spruce is difficult to pair up aesthetically with other timbers. And clients requests at times make that near on impossible. I've had to tell some a flat out no to some combo's and turn away the work.
