Nice bit of Gidgee

This is my most recent completed build, I’ve been slack tacking photos, the guitar itself has been completed for some time and it sounded so damn good I kept it for myself.

Cedar top, Gidgee and maple to fill in the gaps.

The gidgee looks sensational. Did it fight you in bending, or any other comments on working with it?

I agree, This was a score from Pete that I couldn’t pass up once I saw it, I knew I had to build a guitar from it and it’s now my personal player. Looks and sounds sensational.

Re: “Working with Gidgee”

Bending: I use a LMI bender and I found the Gidgee to bend just as easy as everything else I’ve put through it. No issues at all. That includes the cutaway.

Routing: Gidgee sucks to route the binding recess, it chips and tears like a mother fr. I had a large chunk tear out of this one that I had to fill/repair, as I did with the Gidgee one I’m currently building. I’ve done acoustic back and sides with Planetree, Blackwood, and all the rest of my builds have been Rosewood, never had an issue with any of them, however the two Gidgee builds both have chipped out.

Sanding: as with any wood that is very hard, you’ll need more elbow grease and use more sandpaper.

Cutting: if you’re cutting it from a billet, I’ve found Gidgee will fight you in any way it can. No matter how good your bandsaw blade is the Gidgee will make it wander, so extra allowance is needed in your blank tolerance. Expect to go through cutting bits and saw blades faster than normal too. Best to just buy precut blanks from Pete!

Wonderful looking guitar Allen. The wood from Pete is so great that I have to check my bank account balance before I open Instagram these days. I like the cedar gidgee combo and your photos are looking really nice showing both how nice the wood is and your finish. :cl :cl

Thanks for the kind words, definitely send your money to Pete, well worth it.

The finish is 2k Mirotone sealer with 2k Mirotone clear.

The guitar looks beautiful,
Would also like to hear a sound sample.
I have a same cut bit of Gidgee from same log from Curly ebay. thinned down to 2mm, like traditional Rosewood, yet this wood it is sooo floppy across grain, unlike stiff rosewood, and also it is soooo heavy.. I think it has only 30-50% of the resonance in tap tone compared to rosewood and the pitch on the tone is low or dead. word that comes to mind is saggy. After I bought this wood, I thought, I can not imagine this ever producing a good guitar, even though its been so highly promoted by curly on ebay. , but I build classical and flamenco, would be interesting to hear a steel string with the extra 30 or so kg of tension on the strings than a classical

I used to have a rack mount recording setup, however it all got sold off as I don’t play anymore. Any recording I make would only be a mobile phone clip and we all know a mobile phone recording could make the best guitar in the world sound like a toy shop special!

I’ve built a very similar guitar to this using Rosewood back/sides and Ebony board and bridge, full dread without the cutaway. The Cedar top on the two is a consecutive cut from the same block, so I’d like to think they’re identical. Both sound fantastic and somewhat similar, the Gidgee guitar in my opinion sounds nicer.
