Build #2: Steel String

Post by stunami » Thu May 16, 2019 9:31 am

This baby was built with Trevor Gore's guitar course in mind - finished a few weeks before Trevor arrived in Newcastle and was hanging up in Phil Dawson's shed being sprayed when the course was on... bit of a shame but oh well :D

Top: Engelmann with Falcate Bracing
B&S: Blackwood, Live Back. Sides have weights bolted in for tone adjustments...
Neck: Qld Maple
Fretboard: mmm.. Gidgee i think..
Bridge & Headplate: Blackwood
Saddle & Nut: Tusq
Rosette: Paua Shell (designed in Adobe Illustrator, cut using an engraving machine)
Pickup: K&K
Finish: Gloss Nitro

if you spot them, there's no need to remind me ;) - There are some awesome cosmetic mistakes with this build but I'm going with the Japanese concept of Wabi Sabi and appreciating the beauty of imperfection :D

Rich Bass & Sparkly Treble to my ear :)

Never played a steel string before so can't make a good comparison...

Looks good, don't worry about mistakes. Build for sound first and foremost.

I couldn’t agree more. Build for good sound, and FEEL. Aesthetic imperfections are pretty meaningless. The most beautiful instrument in the world is going to quickly lose its beauty with time and use - but it will not gain in sound quality if it does not have that attribute to begin with. That looks great Stu.

I like the Blackwood. Great result and look forward to hearing a sound sample.

Lovely! You're the only one who will see the mistakes. Blackwood has to be one of the best looking back and sides out there. Sounds great too.

I like wabisabi a lot, especially on my tuna.

Nice job. Wouldn’t have picked the bridge for Blackwood. My Japanese is rusty but I think it’s subarashi yo!
