Interesting start to the day

Post by kiwigeo » Mon Sep 28, 2009 10:00 pm

Was waiting outside my perth hotel for a taxi at 5.30am today when a taxi mini van pulled up outside. I tought it was my cab so approached the vehicle. As I wrapped on the drivers window to get his attention I noticed 3 girls in the back of the van screaming their heads off and banging on the windows. I didnt think much of it as it was a long weekend in Perth and things were cooking up in Northbridge... I thought they were a bucnh of party girls having a good time. My cab then arrived and by then one of the girls was hanging out the window of the minivan screaming at the top of her lungs that she was being abducted and the driver wouldnt let her out of the cab. Both my driver and myself went to investigate. The minivan driver told us the girls owed him $15 so that was why he wasnt letting them out of the cab. I offered the guy $20 but he refused to take it. I then offered him the option of either taking the money and letting the girls out or Id call the cops and let them sort things out. The guy didnt seem to like this idea and the girls were allowed to leave the cab. They were in a real state and one of them started dressing down the offending driver accusing him of picking them up and then picking up a bunch of his mates and spending an hour riding around the CBD while they got physical with them. I dont usually believe alot of what teenagers tell me but these girls were terrified and the actions and words of the driver didnt add up. My driver and I werent happy leaving the girls on their own with the suspect driver still lurking around and his mates apparently dropped off just around the corner a few minutes earlier so I bundled them into my cab and we went off for a ride to the airport where I jumped out to catch my flight to work while they headed back to their hotel in the city. One of the girls got the suspect driver's details along with my driver and my details so a complaint will be laid with the taxi board.

An interesting start to the day and a disturbing example of some of the dodgey stuff going on in the taxi industry.

Freakin' Heck.

Good on you Martin. Too many people just don't want to get involved these days when anyone is in distress or something just seems amiss. It's too easy to turn a blind eye.

Those girls could be very lucky you were not willing to let it pass.

Jeremy.

It was a joint effort between myself and my driver...he was also not willing to leave the girls by themselves....I also have a feeling he didnt charge the girls for getting them back to their hotel.

Good on ya Martin as Jeremy said, some people would'nt want to get involved. Didn't ring right when he refused to take the money to cover the fare from you, never known a Taxi driver to turn down a fare plus a 5 buck tip.
Had a case here, i think it was last year but the years go so quick these days that it could be two or three! where a woman was 'set upon' by a Taxi driver with the intent of getting his leg over. The problem when you de-regulate an industry...any clown/idiot or pervert can get into it.
Let us know how this progresses

Takes courage to step up, and step in. Those young women are very lucky you were there - a lot of folks would have done nothing, read something awful in the news the next day, and wonder why they didn't do anything.

As you Antipodeans would say, "Onya!"

Thanks for the accolades guys but I think most of us in here are gentlemen who don't like seeing people getting a bum wrap and would have intervened.

Speak for yourself    No I'd like to think I'd step up when a situation/need arises.Unfortunately the world is changing & the horrible people are taking over, not uncommon to get either set upon, stabbed,or arrested for your troubles these days. But you still like to wade in when something doesn't look right.

Hesh, the girls were absolute stunners. Nice kids up from Bunburry (to the south) for a weekend in Perth. Guess they got a bit more excitement then they bargained for.
