ANOTHER big earthquake in Christchurch

Post by morgan » Tue Feb 22, 2011 11:51 am

6.3 magnitude

http://www.geonet.org.nz/earthquake/qua ... 8575g.html

The NZ Herald site is unreachable at the time of writing this, but Stuff has some info:
http://www.stuff.co.nz/4688231/Large-qu ... ristchurch

It seems there is some serious damage.
Some very scary footage on TV3 right now, and somebody has already got a live video of the quake on youtube:

Nick + anyone else there, hope you are ok.

 Oh Crap.

That looks very bad indeed.

Certainly hope you are OK Nick along with all the other NZ based luthiers - Puff, Morgan, Christian, Richard and others that are not coming to mind presently... Likewise to your friends and families.

Sorry to hear there appears to be many deaths and injuries this time.

Terrible news.

Jeremy.

The severity of this earthquake is just emerging. There was significantly worse damage than the previous one, despite the lesser magnitude. There have been deaths. There are a lot of serious injuries. Many buildings have collapsed. For those of you unable to see the coverage on TV3, I can tell you it looks like a war zone. People are trapped in buildings, the hospital has had to be evacuated, the city has run out of ambulances. One person has reported that 60% of Lyttleton (where it was centered) has been flattened. The centre is officially being evacuated but many people are unable to leave due to the obstructions on the road. Many of the major buildings in the CBD have collapsed. The timing and the depth of it have exacerbated it's effects.

The most up-to-date news I've seen has been via the #eqnz hashtag on twitter and the photos/videos posted from people I know down there.

It's bad.

Thanks for your concern Jeremy, but myself and Christian are at the top of the North Island and nowhere near it. Not sure where Puff and Richard are located.

Looks like yet another nightmare, dammit.
Lillian, I reckon all comms in the area will be down for quite awhile.
Nick & the others will know to post here as soon as they are able.

And to think I woke up worrying about a little neck angle reset......

I'm sure they are, but I was hoping that someone has heard something from them.

Auckland not affected other than being a bit in shock - excuse the pun

Central Christchurch looks bad though. We've heard from a few mates that work in our office there, they are OK but homes are much more affected than the last time. The main cathedral in the centre of town, an iconic image of survival for the last quake, has lost its spire.

One big building has collapsed and there are about 30 people in there. One building on fire. Lots of liquefaction, puddles of water and sewage from broken mains,

When we finally get pics of Lyttelton ( a suburb) which was at the epicentre, I suspect we will think we are looking at Haiti. Lots more to unfold yet, I fear.

Dave Olds is in Auckland or was last night at least so should be OK. Its only Nick in CHCH I think, (and Martins Dad of course) but comms are affected so we are probably not going to hear from him for a while, even if he is OK. Fingers and toes crossed.

Earthquakes, floods, cyclones, what the bloodly hell is coming next?

Good luck you guys in CHCH.
Richard

So sorry this has happened in Christchurch area, especially sad to hear there were deaths and injuries.

Be well, Nick and Martin's father!

Time we had a bit of a break from all this death and destruction, I am tired of all the bad news and it is just not fair that Christchurch should cop it again.

I hope this turns out a LOT better that it sounds at the moment.

Peace and safety for all.

Tragic and shocking news . I'm watching the horror of this on the news in almost disbelief .

All our thoughts are with you Nick , and not forgetting Graham Wardrop , another Christchurch resident.

I'm almost sure Martin mentioned his father is in the Lyttleton area . I hope I'm wrong about that

Talked to my family this am. Brothers house is a write off, sister has a lake in her backyard and my dads unit is under water. The location of lAtest shocks suggests a second fault system to east of city.

Nick I heard the uni took damage.

On the iPhone here so excuse typos

Been following this from last night. I hope all are well and safe over there. Sounds like some communication lines are starting back up, that seems a good sign and will help with response efforts.
As a side note, University buildings are generally built to high standards code wise. May not hear from folks for a couple more days.

*cough cough* Just clearing the dust from my throat. Our little family unit is OK, everybody's a bit shaken (excuse the pun) but even I'm starting to get well and truly f**ked off with this stuff.
Central city is a complete mess & not nice hearing the death toll rise, fell right on lunch break so plenty of people getting about town when the shake occured. Takes ages to get anywhere and we are without power, water & sewerage but we have our lives so nothings too bad. Everything that was up in the house is now down, never had a single thing broken in the 7.1 but now it's hard to find anything that isn't broken! I was at work and it shook our big concrete building like a tissue, yours truly found a nice sturdy work bench to cower under.
On limited internet time but just thought I'd check in to let everybody know I'm still breathing. Will update when I'm able but thanks everybody for thinking of me, very touching  .

Nice to hear in church but not in a Mexican prison.

Great to hear you and company are unscathed too Nick. We can collectively let our breaths out now.

Otherwise, a tragic situation. :(
