what wood ??

Post by auscab » Wed Mar 05, 2014 4:05 pm

I have this Davenport in for some work to be done on it . At first glance I thought it was BRW because most of the ones that I see that are this early are BRW. I told the client BRW. Now I don't think it is though.
It looks like the grain I have seen in Zircote used in instruments . with the colour of BRW.
What do you think ?

Dead ringer for Mexican Cocobolo I reckon Rob. In that form it is sometimes called 'Landscape' Cocobolo.

Here's a pic I stole from the net of some Mexican Cocobolo fretboards

Generally, 'Nicaraguan' Cocobolo has straighter grain and therefore, is often less dramatic to look at.

Cheers

Thanks Kim , a nice match .
Crazy looking wood . The first time I saw such timber about three years ago, I hardly believed that grain pattern .
Zircote has a similar thing happening to that cocobolo but that Mexican cocobolo looks closer to the old bit I have here.
Are they related ? and are they banned timbers for import ?

I any case I suggest you get the Pics off here quick smart, if the Woodrat spots it he'll be in the Rat mobile and down there sawing the legs off it before you know what's happened.

Cheers,
Paul .

I know what you mean , I saw him cutting that timber up in the UK :) .
I even helped him get an Antique to cut up. This thing is mostly veneers though .
And too nice.
I couldn't cope seeing such a piece put to the saw.

I don't think cocobolo has made cat 1 of CITES yet Rob but last I heard it was looking to head that way.

I think the two are botanically related and, like so often happens in the plant world, the genetic separation is possibly the result of topographical adaption over time.

Oh, just clicked. If you were asking if cocobolo and ziracote are related? No...ziracote is a cordia. A close relative of ziracote from Mexico that also happens to have a very interesting grain patten is Bocote.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was Brazilian. I've seen some that looks just like that with that spider webbing through it.

Sand a little of the inside and have a smell.

The smell test is the way to go , and I probably can do that because some of the mouldings are loose and have to be removed,so they can be put back on right. Ive never seen BRW with that figure but I believe what your saying Bob because since becoming interested in guitar construction , the level of quality figured wood has taken a leap up from what I see in antique furniture use.

Hey Rob I had assumed you had already discounted BRW which is why I suggested cocobolo. BRW with that kind of spider webbing or landscape figure is the grail 8) .
