Smallman style adjustable neck construction

Got a new way of doing something? Or maybe an old method that needs some clarification.

Here is a brief overview of how I make the Smallman style adjustable neck.

Very cool, thank you David.

I used some 1/4" x 1/4" solid carbon fibre as the main neck support in a steel string a while back. The guitar was a bit of a factory clunker really, it was cheap and nasty with the neck having no heel and receiving scant support other than the thin ply of the body. Slow implosion was the only prognosis for any guitar of this model so I took it on as a challenge. :)

By using carbon in the upper transverse brace, and beefing up the linings, I was able to over come the design faults and that little guitar has held up extremely well. In fact my daughters fight over who gets to use it at practice time :D

Anyhooo, I really like carbon fibre and think it has great application in lutherie. The matey project opened my eyes and ever since I have been contemplating using it as you show here, as a pivot for an adjustable.

Thanks for sharing

Thanks for taking the time to make and post that David. I like that design alot.

Is there any way to adjust yaw in that design other than to remove material from either the treble or bass side of the CF pivot?

Thanks for posting this David . It looks a little like those Strat tilt necks. I've seen this set-up before and concluded it would need massive support near the transverse brace such as Smallmans large inner plywood cage .
One question : Why have a heel? Doesn't seem to be serving any purpose that I can work out ?

Craig, I read somewhere that Greg was making guitars without the heel. Presumably had the same conclusion as you.

Aesthetics would be my first guess. Classical players are a pretty conservative lot, and no heel would be a bit much for most of them to accept.

Yes but a heeless neck does allow better access to the higher frets without the need for a cutaway.

Cheers

The alignment of the neck appears to be held by the pull of the strings alone . Wouldn't take much force to make the neck unstable IMO

Pretty well locked in for alignment by the neck and heel sitting into mortices in the body.
