Dressing Frets

Got a new way of doing something? Or maybe an old method that needs some clarification.

Dressing Frets

Post by Bob Connor » Thu Oct 04, 2007 8:08 pm

I took some photos of the fret vise today so I'll start there.

I bought this from Ebay which cost about $20 but I reckon you could knock one of these up in under 20 minutes.

I use another mini clamp on the fret vise to keep the the fret secure.

Firstly take the fret nippers to it and take the tang off.

Then square it up on the sander.

Clean up where you nipped the tang off.

I then turn the fret upside down and round the end.
Use a large file for rounding the ends. A smaller fret file will slip and jag into the fret surface. I usually use a big bastard.

Flip the fret vise over and roughly file the fret end to the angle that you want and then use the file to add a 45 degree angle to the fret corners.

I then start with 600 grit sandpaper to 'fair' up the end of the fret.

Then get some micromesh pads and polish the entire fret up to 12000 grit.

It should end up looking something like this.

And on the finished guitar look like this.
