Aloha Tim,
A nice clean job! Much more important than pimping it up and forgetting about sound and playability. Welcome to the ukulele world...(^-^)

Thanks Everyone for your welcome's.
You are going to call me a bastard when you find out how I made the sides.
It's local walnut veneer laminated and pressed.
I did this method to see how it would work and sound but have been practicing my steam bending for my next one which will be out of local African mahogany.
Had a good look at the site last night and i see there is a lot of nice timber around.
Talk soon Must go off and oil my fret board.
Tim

G'day Tim. I almost fell over when I saw Darwin in your intro.
I have thought about using the local Mahogany but have always been a bit worried about the way it checks out in the striped figure ( I have used lots of it in slab form for bench tops), I must admit though since some guys have been kiln drying it up here it has been improving. I'll will be very interested to see the results as it is a very pretty piece of wood.
I am in Millner and if you want to drop in and swap notes anytime just send me a personal message and I'll give you a phone number to arrange a time.

Below you will see the caul and the end result which is 3 layers of veneer glued and pressed. It holds it shape and doesnt move.Hippety Hop wrote:Good on ya Tim. You look good with a uke in your hand.
Pale lookin walnut. Grouse binding. I've got dremelphobia.
What d'ya mean 'pressed'. How?
Where'd he go?

Good show with the laminated veneer, Tim. From a historical standpoint, laminated ukulele sides have been around at least since the mid-1920's and were considered to be a strong selling point in the Lyon and Healy instrument catalogs of the day.
Jim, I was happily lead astray by fellow piscator Francis whilst in Albany at the recent Playmakers 2009. "Off to Nanarup" he said shortly after dawn. "Bream beware!" The Nanarup estuary is a lovely place - so quiet and peaceful aside from the joyful whoops of two crazed fishermen using ultralight gear. I can't wait for an excuse to go back and give it another try.

Nice looking job Tim, even your slotting jig looks as though a bit of time and sweat's gone into it. Please forgive my ignorance as I'm unfamiliar with these little powerhouses, but is the neck just glued on? There doesn't appear to be any mechanical aid (dovetail e.t.c) or even a screw holding it on.
"Jesus Loves You."
Nice to hear in church but not in a Mexican prison.

I thought about a removable neck but for such a small instrument i didn't think it was needed but i could be wrong.

Your also a complete bastard. I've been trying to get that midgee off my screen for a couple of minutes. Not bad for your first post. You'll fit in just right here.
Is that our local walnut, or from overseas?

Hi Cactuscactus bum wrote:Hello Tim, and welcome. Nice looking mini you built. Can you tell me about your benches. They look a bit specialized. I am jealous of your bandsaw. No offence, i'll get over it. Do you teach woodworking, or instrument building? One photo referred to a student. Cheers, Cactus
