Any guesses what this is? Its part of my departed mates stash and I'm going to help his family sell it

Looking at the first pic I would have said Indian Rosewood but the second photo makes me not so sure. I'm thinking maybe plantation grown IRW from Indonesia or similar??

I agree. Looks like African Blackwood.
http://www.lmii.com/products/mostly-woo ... -blackwood
It is now on the CITES list and the LMI website has the not for export US price around $550US. Rare as here in Aus! From your pics it looks like it has been bent and shaped for a classical build. Apparently difficult to bend, so for a classical, the work has been done!

What does it smell like if you sand a little?

There are several Dalbegia's (true Rosewood's) that could look like that, as Martin suggested, Indian being one, Brazilian another potential.

100% ID will be difficult, but smell will help. Weight would too but may be difficult with the shape and any potential bracing etc.

Cheers,

Jeremy.

Thanks Again.
I did sand it on the inside of one the sides as I recalled that being a test for brw. Allowing for the fact that I have a bit of a cold atm I couldn't smell anything so I won't get my hopes up. The grain did seem to suggest it. It's nice whatever it is.

Cheers all
Richard
